High school delayed
BOE to award contracts May 9
The Hartselle Board of Education will award contracts on the construction of the new high school on May 9, according to a statement read at its board meeting Monday.
Board President Jennifer Sittason said the board is considering awarding individual contracts instead of one large contract for the school construction.
“By diligently working through this process, our goal is to save the school system money, while at the same time provide our students and the community with the highest quality facility that we can all be proud of – for years to come,” she said in a prepared statement. “I am confident we will be able to accomplish this goal.”
After its regular meeting Monday, the board met with the city council to discuss the school project. Brian Moore of Martin and Cobey Construction, who is the project manager, said they are looking at splitting up the school construction into 10 separate bids. All of the contractors would answer to Jim Maynard, who is the onsite project manager.
“It reduced the risk to the schools if one of the contractors were to fold,” Moore said.
Moore also added that site work is nearly completed. He expects that phase to be completed by May 24 depending on the weather. He believes that if the bids are awarded by May 9, school officials could break ground by late May or early June.
When asked by council members on what items may be cut to get the school within budget, Moore said they may look at using a shingle roof opposed to a metal roof. He said they may use cheaper styles of tile instead of having a polished concrete floor.
