Princess announces summer camp schedule
The Princess Theatre for Performing Arts has announced the schedule for its upcoming second annual Camp Princess.
The sessions are designed by age groups with two professional theater organizations. Birmingham’s Children’s Theatre will offer workshops for three days June 27-29. Act I for ages 4-5 features “Little Ones” – Acting and Dancing, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Act II is designed for ages 6-7 and will include puppets and singing. Students will discover how to draw on their memory of emotions when working on stage with classes in creative dramatics, music dance and puppetry. A short ‘Show & Tell;’ performance by both groups will take place at the end of the three-day camp on stage.
Renaissance Theatre will offer two one-half day sessions for five days July 11-15 with age appropriate activities for a creative drama experience during Theatre on Stage. A teaching staff of four will lead a unique theater camp experience that concludes with the young performers presenting their work at the Princess stage July 15 at 6 p.m. Session I features choreography, musical theater and basic acting for ages 8-12 from 9 a.m. until noon. Emily Jones, a Decatur native, is a trained classical guitarist who teaches guitar at Mississippi State University and serves as an artist in residence at the Princess Theatre. She is assisted by guitar instructors Linda Speed of Athens and Margarita de Quesada of Calhoun Community College. The session is open to young girls who are beginners or immediate students in guitar for two one-half day sessions. She will teach guitar fundamentals such as keys, chords, reading music, strum patterns and finger picking, as well as the history of the instrument, notation and traditional musical styles. During the evening of the final day, students will perform a recital for their families and the public with a performance by Emily Jones and other instructors.
On July 18, hip hop instructor and choreographer Mark Sellers will teach students the basics of dance during a day-long session. Sellers is a working actor/teacher in Los Angeles. He won awards on Star Search and American Bandstand in dance prior to joining the cast of Solid Gold. He also was featured in Michael Jackson’s legendary video “Thriller,” appearing as one of the graveyard zombies.
