Smith signs with UNA basketball
Priceville High School’s Amber Smith, a 6-0 guard, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of North Alabama.
The senior honor student signed her scholarship Wednesday morning in the school library. Present to extend their congratulations and best wishes were her parents, coaches, and teammates.
“I’ve wanted to play basketball at the college level ever since I was a little girl,” Smith said, “and UNA was my No. 1 choice all along. I’m excited and look forward to next season. I like the people there and I think they have a great basketball program.”
Smith said she will pursue a career in secondary education with a focus in general science. She also plans to coach basketball in the future.
“Amber has been a part of our basketball program since she was in the seventh grade and has been my teacher’s aide for three years,” said Lady Bulldogs head coach Catrina Mason. “She has the total package: intelligence, beauty and awesome athletic skills. She is also a superb leader both on and off the court.”
Smith played at the No. 3 guard position as a senior and led her team in scoring from 3-point range. She also received the Scholar Athlete Award. She averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds per game and was credited with 45 assists, 39 steals and 14 blocked shots.
She holds a 4.48 grade point average, the seventh highest in her class, and made 28 on her ACT.
As a three-year varsity starter, Smith helped the Lady Bulldogs compile a 60-35 record and reach the Elite 8 and Sweet 16 in the Class 4A playoffs during her sophomore and junior years. She was named to All-Area teams all three years.
Smith is the daughter of Jeff and Kim Smith and has a brother, Austin, who is an eighth grader at Priceville Junior High School.
