Woman accused of drug use during pregnancy
A Hartselle woman was indicted on charges of chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death after being accused of using illegal drugs while she was pregnant.
On Aug. 2, 2009 Donna Vick of Hartselle gave birth to a stillborn fetus in the bathroom of her motel room at the Motel 6 on Sixth Avenue in Decatur, according to a Decatur Police press release.
Police and medics were called to the room by another resident. Vick was transported to Decatur General Hospital for treatment while the fetus was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
Police said the autopsy confirmed the fetus was stillborn.
“A toxicology report indicated the presence of cocaine, amphetamine and methamphetamine in the fetus,” the release stated. “The level of methamphetamine was in the toxic range.”
Police alleged that Vick continued to use illegal drugs while she was pregnant. Investigators believe illegal drug use was the cause of the fetal death.
On May 13, Donna Vick was located in Hartselle and arrested and transported to the Decatur City Jail. Vick was transferred to the Morgan County Jail and held in lieu of $5,000 bond.
