Students honored at band banquet
A banquet and awards program was conducted by Hartselle High School and Hartselle Junior High School bands on Friday to recognize contributions made by band members at both schools during the 2010-2011 school year. The event was held at First United Methodist Church.
Band directors Randall Key (high school) and Jeff Vaughn (junior high) singled out several band members for individual recognition.
The high school symphonic band was recognized for earning a superior rating at State Band Competition for the seventh year in a row. In addition, the marching band was cited for winning the Best in Class, Best in Percussion, Best in Majorettes and third best overall at the Southern Showcase Marching Festival in Dothan.
Varsity band members receiving individual awards included:
• Outstanding Freshman Award, Ethan Johnson and Jaime McKelvy
• Outstanding Sophomore Award, Chad Scarborough
• Outstanding Junior Award, Caleb Foster
• Outstanding Senior award, Tyler Bucham
• Majorette Leadership Award, Megan Smith
• Color Guard Leadership Award, Cheyenne Mullins and Mary Beth Moore
• Drum Major Leadership Award, Tori Halbrooks
• Rookie of the Year, Jacob Briscoe
• Leadership Award, Cape Sandlin
• Esprit De Corps Award, Noah Battles
• Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, Krista McCaig
• Director’s Award, Michael Aaron
• John Phillip Sousa Award, Josh Walker
Other achievements Recognized as members of the District Honor Band were Chad
Several other band members were recognized for achieving honors during the school year. They included Scarborough, Johnson, McKelvy and Walker, District Honor Band; Walker, All-State Band; Julian Lucky, Walker, Johnson, Krista McCaig, Jacob Briscoe and McKelvy, superior solo; and Briscoe, Lucky, Ricky Pugh, McKelvy, Johnson and Michael Aaron, superior ensemble.
Awards were presented to junior band members as follows:
• Beginning Student of the Year, Janik Patel
• Seventh Grade Student of the Year, Sydney Lindley
• Eighth Grade Student of the Year, Marisa Holyoak
• Director’s Award, Brad Gentle
• and John Phillip Sousa Award, Sarah Butler.
Amelia Reed was recognized as a member of the Auburn Honor Band and Butler was cited as a member of the Auburn University Jr. High Symphonic Honor Band.
Students who scored superior ratings in Solo and Ensemble Festival were also recognized as follows: James Ashley, Nathan Brooks, Daniel Case, Gentle, Josh Hamilton, Andrew Lawson, Savannah Lemmons, Lindley, Cody Long, Erin Kenney, Rachel McKelvy, Beau Nosal, Madison Timmons and Aden Ward.
The junior band placed second out of 12 bands at the Music in the Parks Festival in St. Louis, Mo.
