Patriots looking to rebuild
Brewer head football coach Daniel Gullion is looking for replacements.
The Patriots had 15 starters graduate this year, several of which played both ways. The only starters remaining are Desmon Pegues, Mark Honeycutt and Josh Wilson.
That means Gullion is looking for guys to step up this season.
“We return only three starters and that’s on both sides of the football,” Gullion said. “We’re looking for guys to step up and fill those roles. Some of them did this spring, but we’ve got a long way to go.”
Brewer completed its spring drills with a spring game against Good Hope. Gullion said a different unit played in each quarter of the game, making it difficult for any group to get into a rhythm.
“The ninth grade played a quarter, then the JV played a quarter,” Gullion said. “Just about every time we got a possession, a different group was playing, but we did get some good experience out of it.”
The Patriots went 2-8 last season with its wins coming against Curry and Priceville. They will play in the same region with teams like Hartselle, Cullman and Walker again this year.
Gullion said his team will likely be a running team, but it still hasn’t developed its identity yet.
“We’re still looking for an identity,” Gullion said. “We’re going to have to find that identity if we’re going to be able to compete next season.”
The Patriots will compete in several 7-on-7 camps in July along with its summer conditioning program. Although they will not have mandatory workouts during June, Gullion said he will keep the weight room open all month.
“Since school ran so late this year, we decided to give our guys a break in June,” Gullion said. “I will have the weight room open, but we’ll start our conditioning in July.”
The first day of fall football practice is Aug. 1.
