Principal changes made at four county schools
The Morgan County School Board removed the interim status from the principal’s position at Priceville High School and made changes in leadership positions at three others schools at a called meeting Wednesday afternoon.
On the recommendation of Superintendent Bill Hopkins Jr., the board voted 5-0 to change Mark Mason’s status at Priceville High School from interim principal to principal. His contract will be probationary from June 13 until May 25, 2012.
Board members Mike Tarpley and Kenneth Henson were absent from the meeting.
Mason became interim principal after former principal Guy Bowling was suspended in January 2011. Previously, he was half-time assistant principal at Priceville Junior High and Sparkman Schools.
Bowling resigned in April but remained on administrative leave with pay until it became effective June 2.
In other moves involving principal and assistant principal positions, the board acted as follows:
• Approved the transfer of Cliff Booth from principal at Brewer High School to principal at the Morgan County Learning Center, effective July 1, with the continuation of his current contract.
•Approved the transfer of Jeremy Childers from principal at Union Hill School to principal at Brewer High School, effective July 1. He will remain on his current contract but will receive a salary increase to the level of a high school principal.
• Approved the transfer of Robbie Elliott from assistant principal at Brewer High School to principal at Union Hill School, effective July 1. He will receive a probationary principal contract, effective July 1 through May 25, 2012.
• Approved the transfer of Jill Jones from principal at the Morgan County Learning Center to assistant principal at Brewer High School, effective July 1.
Hopkins said the changes would strengthen the school system by putting administrators in positions where they will be able to better serve the needs of students. Also, no additional cost will be incurred since the assistant principal position splitting time between Sparkman and Priceville Jr. High will be eliminated.
“As the principal goes, so goes the school,” said Tom Earwood, board chairman. “I congratulate you and thank you for serving in these positions and I challenge you to be the best you can be for our kids.”
The board acted on other matters as follows:
• Accepted notice of retirement from Carol June Evans, an English teacher at Falkville High School, effective at the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
• Accepted notice of retirement from Pamela Holmes. a sixth grade teacher at Falkville High School, effective at the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
•Approved Linda Hammonds as a science teacher at Lacey’s Spring School, effective beginning with the 2011-2012 school year. She will be reassuming her duties from the 2010-2011 school year.

• Approve Michael Henson as a physical education †teacher at West Morgan Middle and West Morgan High Schools, effective beginning with the 2011-2012 school year. He will be replacing Keith Harris who transferred.
