Debris cleanup continues in Hulaco
The cleanup of debris left in the Hulaco community by an April 27 tornado is continuing, but not at a pace that makes Morgan County District 4 Commissioner Greg Abercrombie feel comfortable.
“The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) still hasn’t approved rights-of-entry to allow the contractor to go on private property,” Abercrombie said. “I’m concerned because we’re under a 30-day window that ends next Monday to get the work done. After that, the county will have to pick up five percent of the cost.”
He also said the debris removal contractor is waiting for FEMA’s approval to begin removing leaning and hanging trees from road rights-of-way.
On a positive note Abercrombie reported that all of the debris that was placed on the road rights-of-way has been removed. He said the amount totaled 22,000 cubic yards.
A resolution was approved by the Morgan County Commission two weeks ago to give a contractor the right to enter on private property for the purpose of removing trees and other debris from driveways and around buildings. The resolution was brought back to the governing body for revision at its meeting on Tuesday.
In a separate but related action, the commissioners passed a resolution acknowledging that Morgan County has received donations for the relief of tornado victims It authorized the donations to be placed in a fund to be administered by the commission at its discretion to homeowners and residents that were affected by the April 27 tornado.
