Taking a vacation without leaving
Vacation Bible School is an annual staple of churches across Alabama during the summertime.
When I was young, this was one of the more fun times of the year. It was the time when it was a little more fun to go to church.
First of all, when you went to VBS, you didn’t have to get dressed up. So you were always wearing comfortable everyday clothes instead of having to wear dress shirts and pants.
VBS never had the same feel as Sunday School or regular church services. The classrooms were always decorated with the theme of that year.
So it made for a much more fun and engaging atmosphere around the church building.
And I think all of us kids always hated when it was over. We couldn’t wait for it to come around the next year too.
Now that I’m older, I still enjoy seeing VBS still around in our churches. I’ve helped out with VBS at my home church, most of the time it was helping out in the sound and lighting booth to help create the atmosphere of the event.
Although I was only covering a VBS at West Hartselle Baptist Church, it was still great to see different age groups interacting with each other. You had the teachers. Many of the teens were volunteering their time on a summer day to help out. Then you had the children from preschool through elementary school.
It’s fun to see the kids having a great time learning about the Lord and I always hope that it’s something that will impact the kids down the road.
But the most special time of the week is when the kids have the chance to make a decision to accept Christ. This is what it’s all about.
