2 softball teams seek state titles
Hartselle’s Dixie Softball League will be represented by two all-star teams—the 7&8 Darlings and 11&12 Ponytails– at the 2011 Dixie State softball Tournament in Scottsboro, beginning Friday, July 15.
An opening ceremony will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. and games will begin at 6:30 p.m. All games will be played in Bynum Park on Jefferson Drive. The winner will advance to the Dixie World Series in Pineville, La.
Hartselle’s 7&8 Darlings will open against Sand Mountain at 6:30 p.m. Six other teams will be competing for the state championship. The title game is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m.
Hartselle Darlings teams have won five back-to-back state championships. They also have a World Series title and finished as the runner-up team in 2009 and 2010.
Team members are Allie Anders, Kenzie Chumley, Braylie Coffey, Chaney Dutton, Anna Ferguson, Tori Hughes, Jessica Jarrett, Brooke Nelson, Abby Schonebaum, Maggie Smith and Presley Weldon. Coaches are Brandon Dutton, head, Michael Chumley, Shannon Ferguson, Benji Hughes and Dusty Winsett.
Hartselle’s Ponytails will face Taylor/Rehobeth in the opening round of the tournament on Friday at 6:30 p.m. If they win that game, they’ll play again on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The championship game is set Monday morning.
Team members are Abbey Vinzant, Morgan Phillips, Calli Partlow, Lauren Speer, Kaylee Murphy, Laninya Wiggins, Serra Harris, Kennadi Hogan, Hannah Hogan, Annslee Green, Jasmine Jones and Lindsey Robinson. Coaches are Willie Jones, Buddy Robinson, Kenny Hogan, head, and Skip Drinkard.
Both teams go into the tournament unbeaten in sub-district and district competition.
