McKendree United Methodist Church has a special project called “Caleb’s Bucket. This is a ministry started by Caleb Fields and run by he and his young friends.
Caleb’s Bucket is used to take an offering during worship services, focusing on the pocket change of donors. Church members are amazed at how quickly small donations of change can amount to a large sum.
The money is used to meet the simple needs of deserving children. Thanks to the generosity of teachers, family members and friends, Caleb’s Bucket can supply a pair of shoes or a warm coat when they are needed. This project is a reminder that investments in children are eternal and that youth are very important. It also utilizes the wonderful educators that we have in our communities. Caleb’s father is Sandy Fields, an agri-business teacher. His grandparents are Milford and Verna Mae Fields.
McKendree United Methodist Church is blessed to have an active U.M.W. chapter with Carolyn Besnyl as leader. For many years the group met at Carolyn’s home and it now meets in the church library on the third Wednesday of each month.
The UMW follows worldwide mission projects, studies cultures and conditions of different countries, prays for missionaries, collects funds to assist them and conducts service projects. Some of its projects are health kits, school kits and birthing kits for those in need.
Carolyn will be leading the group in a “Mini School of Missions” in August. The ladies also work with projects like UMCOR, the warehouse that stores disaster supplies. Members are Kay Farrer, Linda Ryan, Earlene Morris, Jeannie Alexander, Ruth Lewis, Wyllene Carter, Lorene Bryant, Melee Laney, Jean Lawrence and Sharon Bailey. At their July 10 meeting, members studied about missionaries in the early years of church evangelism.
