Hartselle 7-8 all-stars win state
The Hartselle 7-8 American All-Stars won the Dixie Youth AA State Championship Wednesday night by sweeping Taylorville 9-6, 12-7 at the youth baseball fields in Sparkman Park.
The Tigers and Taylorville will both compete in the Dixie Youth AA Regionals in Mulberry, Fla., beginning July 30.
Hartselle, which was coming off an emotional 8-7 win over Enterprise the night before, held off Taylorville in the final innings of the first game to win 9-6.
In the second game, the Tigers exploded in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead. Seven runs is the maximum number of runs a team can score in an inning in the 7-8 division.
Some fielding errors led to Taylorville chipping away at the lead. Hartselle added runs in both the third and fourth innings and led 9-6 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning.
Then, the Tigers took advantage of a leadoff triple to add a three more runs to lead 12-6, but Taylorville still had one last chance to tie or take the lead.
However, Taylorville could only muster one run as Hartselle’s defense put the game away.
