August 11, 1961—Hartselle’s Gospelaires Quartet featuring Douglas Moss performed in concert tonight at Moss chapel Methodist Church.
August 11, 1961—U.S. Rep. Bob Jones, this district’s Congressman, has been designated as one of the four “representatives of the year” by House Majority Leader John McCormack. Jones is known as “Mr. TVA” on Capitol Hill.
August 11, 1961—Ed Groves, Jr., formerly a student at MCHS, is now stationed with the U.S. Army at Ft. Gordon, Ga. Another MCHS alumnus, Howard Stover, is with the U.S. Navy on a ship off the coast of California.
August 11, 1961—Hartselle football coaches have returned from the UA coaching clinic. Principal speakers were Coach Bear Bryant and his assistants.
August 11, 1961—Ratliff Hardwick and son Macon Hardwick have sold the 52-unit All States Tourist Court and Restaurant on Highway 31 North to R. J. Blankenship.
August 11, 1961—A “stop and turn right on red” sign has been installed at the intersection of Milner and Main streets.
August 11, 1961—City employee Ed Wiley has transferred from the street to the sanitation department. Ervin Speegle will take his place working the streets.
August 11, 1961—H. A. Alexander of Moulton, president of Joe Wheeler co-op, has been elected to a new term. Burl Vest, Falkville 2, is the secretary-treasurer. Entertainment at the annual meeting was provided by Wally Fowler and the Oak Ridge Quartet.
August 12, 1961—A truck exited Highway 31 north of Hartselle early this morning when a wheel came off, causing the vehicle to crash into the Flint Creek bridge. The truck had a cargo of after-shave lotion. The driver was taken to Block-Chandler Hospital here for treatment of his injuries.
August 12, 1961—Bob Orr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Orr, is currently vacationing in England and other parts of Europe. When the fall semester begins he will be teaching English at the University of Virginia.
August 13, 1961—J. R. Teague, Hartselle 2, was uninjured this afternoon in Decatur when his car collided with another while both were attempting to make a left turn at the corner of 6th Avenue and Wilson Street.
August 13, 1961—Hartselle has a small new industry, Byco Plastics, which has set up shop on Railroad St. The company makes laminate for countertops. Entrepreneurs who have established this new business are Charles and Ray Baker and Fred Yates. The brand name for the product is Contourama.
August 14, 1961—Guy Roberts of Hartselle, chairman of the county governing board, is in Chicago today for the annual meeting of the National Association of Counties.
August 14, 1961—Bill Smith is currently enlarging his tin shop on South Corsbie Street. Mrs. J. P. Simpson is adding a room to her home on Milner Street.
August 15, 1961—Mayor Grady Long, presiding over city recorder’s court this morning, sentenced one man to 68 days at hard labor because he said he didn’t have the money to pay his public drunkenness fine. Another got 103 days on the basis of the same excuse for the offense of DUI.
August 15, 1961—Falkville’s Coffee House café was robbed of about $75 in a break-in tonight. The thieves also got a .38 caliber pistol. The Massey school was looted of approximately $50 in food stored in the kitchen pantry.
August 16, 1961—Hartselle residents donated 118 pints of blood during the most recent visit of the Red Cross Bloodmobile here.
August 16, 1961–Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Bentley, Hartselle 4, are the proud parents of a daughter born today at Baugh-Wiley-Smith Hospital in Decatur.
August 17, 1961—UA summer graduation exercises were held today. Hartselle area degree recipients included Max and Ruby Goff and Paul Julich. All three received Masters degrees.
August 17, 1961—Ralph “Shug” Jordan, Auburn University head football coach, spoke at tonight’s meeting of the Morgan County Auburn Alumni Club. Several local Tiger fans were in attendance.
