Smith named Morgan County Distinguished Young Woman
Megan Smith, a Hartselle High School senior, was named Distinguished Young Woman of Morgan County 2012 on July 23.
The program, formerly Morgan County’s Junior Miss, included 13 high school seniors from Hartselle, Decatur, Austin, West Morgan, Brewer, Decatur Heritage, Priceville and Randolph School.
Areas of competition included interview, fitness, self-expression, scholastics and talent. Smith, a baton twirler, won the talent award with her routine to “Hawaii Five-O.” Smith, also the winner of the self-expression award, is the head majorette at Hartselle High School and is the daughter of Jeff and Pam Smith.
In total, Smith was awarded a $2,400 cash scholarship for the title, along with a $5,000 scholarship to the University of Alabama-Huntsville, a $500 cash scholarship for the talent award, and a $500 cash scholarship for the self-expression award.
She will represent Morgan County at the Distinguished Young Women of Alabama Program Jan. 20-21, 2012 in Montgomery.
First Honoree was Miriam Tew of Randolph School. Tew also won the “Be Your Best Self” essay award.
Second Honoree was Mary Beth Snow of Austin High School. Snow also won the scholastic and fitness awards.
Samantha Scheler of Decatur High School won the Spirit award. A total of $7,400 was awarded to this year’s class.
