Danville senior quarterback Caleb Hill ran for 100 yards and one touchdown to lead the Hawks to a 20-14 win over the Brewer Patriots in a preseason scrimmage last Friday night in Florette.
Hill’s touchdown, a 70-yard run, came on the first play from scrimmage. Cody Hudgins added the PAT to give Danville a 7-0 lead just 17 seconds into the three quarter scrimmage.
The rest of the period was dominated by the defenses as the Hawks gained only 30 more yards while holding Brewer to just 1 yard total offense (-15 yards rushing).
The offenses came to life the final four minutes as the two teams traded touchdowns. Danville’s touchdown came on a 4-yard run by Riley Self. The TD came one play after a nice Hill to Justin Morgan 45-yard throw and catch.
Brewer then took over at its own 30 and drove 70 yards in 9 plays for its first score of the evening. The Patriot TD came on a 13 yard pass from #20 to #21. Jon Guffey added the PAT to cut Danville’s lead to 14-7 with just 21 seconds remaining in the half.
The final period began with Brewer driving the ball from its 30 to the Hawk 45 before turning the ball over on downs. Danville then went 55 yards in six plays, scoring on a 34-yard Morgan to Dallas McAbee pass. The PAT failed but the Hawks led 20-7 with 5:20 left in the contest. Brewer got the final points of the night on a 9-yard pass from #20 to #21. #20 kicked the PAT to make the score 20-14 in favor of the Hawks.
Danville took the ensuing kickoff and gained two first downs to run out the clock to take home the victory.
Danville, led by new coach Scott Curd, will open the season on the road next Friday night as the Hawks visit the Colbert Heights Wildcats. Brewer will also open the season on the road at Arab.
Game time for each contest is 7 p.m.
