Curry ruins Brewer’s homecoming
Brewer’s Patriots continued to take their lumps at the hands of the opposition as they fell 37-7 to 5A Region 8 foe Curry in a homecoming match-up Friday night.
Bouyed by the excitement of pregame homecoming festivities, during which Hannah Frost was crowned homecoming queen, the Patriots came out strong and quickly grabbed the lead.
They scored first with 1:32 left in the first period after stuffing the Yellow Jackets on a fourth-and-4 call and marching to Curry’s end zone in six plays. Jalen Chatman plunged over the goal line from a yard out to cap the drive and Hunter Griffin booted the extra point to make the score 7-0.
After that it was all downhill for the Patriots.
Curry responded by returning the ensuring kickoff to Brewer’s 35-yard line and scored two plays later on a 35-yard pass from Clark White to Michael Oliver. Evan Miller tacked on the extra point to tie the score at 7 with 38 seconds left in the opening period.
A Patriot fumble led to Curry’s go-ahead touchdown, a 14-yard run by Oliver, and an aborted quick kick attempt at midfield set the stage for the visitors’ third score with 45 seconds left in the first half.
The visitors upped the lead to 28-7 on a 65-yard drive in eight plays to open the second half and then added a safety, following by their fifth touchdown late in the third quarter.
The Patriot defense stopped a long Yellow Jacket drive early in the final period by forcing their third fumble in the game and taking over at the one-yard line.
They also marched 55 yard in seven plays late in the game before losing the ball on a fumble at Curry’s 15-yard line.
“We’re playing a lot of young guys,” said Brewer head coach Daniel Gullion. “Anytime you have ninth and 10th grade players going up against 11th and 12th graders, the older guys are going to win out most of the time.
“I thought we cut ourselves in the throat with fumbles, penalties and missed assignments,” he added. “But those are things that can be corrected. We’ve just got to keep working hard and striving to get better.
“I’m not going to give up on these guys. They’re working hard and are getting better. They’ll be a good team before they’re finished.”
Junior quarterback Weston Pritchett had a strong game for the Patriots. He completed eight of 16 passes for 88 yards and picked up 25 yards on three consecutive carries in a fourth quarter drive.
