Schools comply with new immigration law
The Hartselle Board of Education is complying with state’s new immigration law, which was passed earlier this year and parts were upheld by a U.S. District Judge.
On Friday, School Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed said he and all other school system administrators received a memorandum from the State Department of Education telling school districts to comply with state law.
“We’ve done what they asked us to do,” Reed said Friday. “What that wanted us to do was to make a list of every student that did not have a birth certificate in his or her file. That list has already been turned in to the state.”
The new regulations only apply to students enrolled on or after Sept. 1. If any student doesn’t have a birth certificate or was born outside the U.S., the school system will send a letter asking for supplemental documentation.
However, Reed said they will continue to educate every student that lives in Hartselle regardless of citizenship status.
“Federal law says that we have to educate every student that attends our schools,” Reed said. “Nothing will change with that.”
