Oct. 20, 1961 – A new residence will be built for the nurses who work at the TB sanitarium at Flint.
Oct. 20, 1961 – Glenn T. Wright, who is stationed with the U.S. Air Force at Keesler AFB in Mississippi has been promoted to Airman 2C. Airman Wright is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Wright and has been in the service for a little over a year.
Oct. 20, 1961 – Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., is reported in the news today to have declined a role in a forthcoming movie. He would have played a Southern senator in “Advise and Consent.”
Oct. 20, 1961 – Russellville defeated MCHS in a football game played there tonight. The final score was 29-14. Wayne Brown had a hand in both MCHS touchdowns, running for one and passing for the other.
Oct. 20, 1961 – It’s predicted that 53,000 fans will be in Birmingham tomorrow to see the Tide play the Vols at Legion Field. If this many spectators fill the stands, it will be the largest crowd ever to see a football game in Alabama. (Late today Legion Field’s new upper deck was ruled to be too dangerous to occupy. About 5,000 fans were accommodated in temporary bleachers.)
Oct. 21, 1961 – Mrs. Tom Stewart Jr. was in Huntsville today for an Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs district meeting
Oct. 22, 1961 – Nationally famous bowler Jan McNeil is in Hartselle this weekend to participate in exhibition matches at the new BeeLine Lanes.
Oct. 23, 1961 – Directors of the Morgan County Cattlemen’s Association met at the county agent’s office here tonight. James E. Peck is president of the association.
Oct. 23, 1961 – Hartselle Bowline Theatre patron Silas Yates was involved in an accident tonight as his vehicle exited the drive-in. He collided with the car of another driver who was doing the same thing.
Oct. 23, 1961 – Tina Onassis, who got a “quickie” divorce from her husband Aristotle here in Alabama last year, has remarried, this time to the Marquess of Blandford in Paris.
Oct. 23, 1961 – SEC Commissioner Bernie Moore issued a statement today urging coaches to “teach morality to their squads – standards that possibly the kids didn’t get in their own homes.”
Oct. 24, 1961 – Guy Roberts and other members of the Morgan County Board of Revenue (county commission) were in Montgomery today to meet with State Highway Director Sam Engelhardt. Two projects they discussed with him were Barkley Bridge Road and Shoal Creek Road.
Oct. 24, 1961 – Hubert Mitchell has announced plans to expand his stage manufacturing equipment business on Railroad Street.
Oct. 24, 1961 – Funeral services were held this afternoon at Hartselle First Baptist for Mrs. Daisy Walden, 47, who passed away early this morning at Hartselle Hospital. The pastor, Rev. W. L. Carden, officiated.
Oct. 24, 1961 – Hartselle driver Ellis Buckalew was involved in auto accidents on Highway 31 North late this afternoon. Mr. Buckalew had appropriately stopped while a school bus unloaded passengers and another car ran into him.
Oct. 24, 1961 – The Hartselle City Council decided to give Albert Clemons his old job with the fire department back to him at its meeting tonight.
Oct. 24, 1961 – Jerry Lewis is now starring in “Ladies Man” at the Ranch Drive-in Theatre.
Oct. 25, 1961 – Artist Norman Rockwell, whose illustrations have captured the essence of American values for generations, married for the third time in a Massachusetts ceremony today.
Oct. 25, 1961 – Hartselle flower show judge Mrs. L. H. Houston was the guest speaker at Decatur’s Trellis Garden Club this morning.
Oct. 25, 1961 – Mayor Grady Long reports that only a small portion of Hartselle’s $6,800 United Fund quota has been raised thus far.
Oct. 26, 1961 – The O. D. Owens and Tharon Speegle families are both constructing new homes here.
Oct. 26, 1961 – Mrs. John D. Long is currently a patient at Decatur General Hospital.
