A look back to Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 1961
Oct. 27, 1961 – The MCHS football Tigers beat the Moulton Red Devils in a game played here tonight. The contest was a romp for MCHS as they won 33-14. Hartselle QB Wayne Brown passed for one TD and ran for a second. Another MCHS player who did exceptionally well was tackle Joe Sparkman.
Oct. 27, 1961 – Hartselle Presbyterian minister the Rev. W. P. Maxwell has been participating in a parenting conference in Huntsville all this week.
Oct. 27, 1961 – Jackie Hogan has been chosen as president of the Massey elementary school girl’s 4-H Club.
Oct. 27, 1961 – Falkville High students were in celebratory mood today at school following last night’s big football homecoming rout of Buckhorn by a 35-6 score.
Oct. 28, 1961 – Several local Auburn fans were on the plains this afternoon for AU’s homecoming football game against Clemson. The Tigers overcame a deficit to win 24-14. Auburn is now back on the winning track after losing to Georgia Tech 7-6 last week. Alabama continued its winning ways by beating Houston 17-0 in a game played in Texas.
Oct. 28, 1961 – Hartselle teachers joined colleagues from other schools in Decatur this morning for a district AEA meeting. Dr. C. P. Nelson is the executive secretary of the association that includes both school administrators and classroom teachers. Dr. Nelson discussed AEA’s “Legislative Action Planning Program.”
Oct. 28, 1961 – The first half of dove season ended today. The season will resume on December 4. The Morgan County Sportsmen’s and Conservation Association held a turkey shoot today near the TB sanatorium. A dressed turkey was awarded to the best shots.
Oct. 28, 1961 – Hartselle Mayor Grady Long reports that about $1,500 of the city’s $6,800 United Fund quota has been pledged so far in the annual campaign.
Oct. 29, 1961 – Hartselle police made six arrests last week. All were accused of alcohol-related offenses.
Oct. 30, 1961 – Hartselle Policeman Floyd Chaney arrested two Decatur youths here today. They are suspected of breaking into more than a dozen businesses over the weekend and stealing both goods (cigarettes and lighters, bubble gum, knives, etc.) and money.
Oct. 30, 1961 – The Morgan County Young Republican Club held their fourth workshop on practical politics in Decatur tonight. It has been a long time since this county had any Republican officeholders.
Oct. 31, 1961 – Halloween passed off quietly in Hartselle tonight. Trick or treaters were out in full force but no harm was done.
Nov. 1, 1961 – A 300-gallon capacity still was destroyed by Morgan County sheriff’s deputies and ABC agents this afternoon on Hartselle 2. One man was arrested and jailed for possession of a still and making moonshine with it.
Nov. 1, 1961 – MCHS was the site tonight of a civil defense meeting presided over by Howard Proctor, director of the Morgan County Civil Defense Corps. There has been a heightened concern with civil defense in light of the ongoing Berlin crisis.
Nov. 1, 1961 – Hartselle Chevy dealer W. H. (Bill) Stewart was in Decatur today for a meeting at which Blaine Brownell, president of the Auto Dealers of Alabama spoke.
Nov. 2, 1961 – Mrs. and Mrs. Clinton Simmons are the proud parents of a baby boy born today at Block-Chandler Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. James Dougherty are the parents of a son born recently at Hartselle Hospital.
Nov. 2, 1961 – Alabama voters will be asked to vote yea or nay on 45 proposed constitutional amendments on December 5. Many will apply to only one city or county in the state. The referendum will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars at the same time funds for critical programs are being cut. Proration has been in effect for five years.
Nov. 2, 1961 – This district’s congressional representative, Democrat Bob Jones, is already out campaigning for another term. He and all other Alabama members are having to run statewide because the Legislature and governor weren’t able to agree on a redistricting plan.
