Shady Grove Baptist pastor honored on 20th anniversary

Special congratulations go out to Shady Grove Baptist Church Pastor Tom Campbell and wife Connie on the completion of 20 years of ministry at the church. Their first service was on Oct. 20, 1991.

During his ministry, Bro. Campbell has made numerous visits to the sick, presided at many funerals and weddings and congratulated many new parents. Connie made chocolate cookies for many of those visits.

The couple was honored with a dinner and gifts by church members and friends to show their love and appreciation on Oct. 16. Bro. Tom was also presented tickets for a pastor’s breakfast with his favorite preacher, David Jeremiah.

Thank you to all of our veterans and their families for their brave service to our country without which we would not have the freedoms that we all enjoy. We should never take our freedom for granted and we should be forever thankful to all of our brave young men and women who serve and protect our country. God bless America and all of our military personnel.

Danville-Neel Elemen-tary School faculty members and students dressed up to participate in a Charter Parade recently.

The old Massey schoolhouse was located northwest of McKendree United Methodist Church on what is now Highway 55. Rachel Slate taught music there in the mid-1960s. All those years, she kept her roll book but it has gone in hiding and can’t be found. She recalls how faithful Charles Holladay was to build a fire in the old warm morning heater on the days she taught. The building was so cold some of the piano keys wouldn’t work until the room warmed up.

This school contained three rooms and had two grades in each room. The lunchroom and the 3rd and 4th grade classroom were divided by large folding doors. which could be opened to make a larger room for activities such as Halloween carnivals, plays and community meetings.

The school closed in 1969 and students were transferred to Danville and Falkville.

Several teachers who taught there are still living. They include Lorene Bryant, Mary Ruth Townsend, Juanita Beck Blackburn, Hazel Holladay, Doris Puckett and Rachel Holladay Slate.
