New pool renderings revealed

Hartselle now has a first look at its city pool.

At its regular meeting Tuesday night, the city Council received an update from GBW Architects about the status of the project. Along with the update, the company also showed artists renderings of what the new pool would look like.

Mayor Dwight Tankersley, who along with Park and Recreation Director Frank Miller and others were appointed by the council to work with GBW on the design of the pool.

“Frank Miller and I are very pleased with the design of the pool,” Tankersley said. “We’re on schedule with what they proposed and we’re hoping everything will continue to stay on schedule with the project.”

The new pool is just one pool that features 25-meter competition lanes with a diving well on one end. It is connected to the play pool area, which also has a zero-entry pool along with several “splash pad” amenities.

The pool keeps one of the old water slides and installs a new water slide in the play side of the pool.

It also features a lazy river, kiddie pool and large pool deck with a much larger number of deck lounge chairs.

John Godwin of GBW Architects said the pool covers an area of 11,500 square feet, which is larger than the old pool. It also has a six-foot wide, 1,000 square foot lazy river.

The pool deck has an area of 29,000 square feet, which will accomodate up to 1,900 people. There are a large number of restrooms including a few on the back side of the pool in a structure that will also house the pool’s chemicals.

There’s also a 49-person party room that Godwin hopes can be a multi-purpose room on the front side of the pool. Godwin also said he used design elements of the Civic Center to blend into the construction of the new bath house, concession stand area.

The project is on schedule to be bid out beginning Mon., Nov. 28. The bids could be awarded as soon as the Dec. 13 meeting, which would give contractors almost five months to construct the pool and the new buildings.
