A private graveside service for Florence Marie Crowder, 85, of Talucah was Sat., Jan. 7, at Crowder-Draper Cemetery with the Revs. Harold Fowler and Ralph Snowden officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Mrs. Crowder died Tues., Jan. 3, 2012, at her residence after a hard-fought battle with congestive heart failure. She was born Oct. 18, 1926, to Maurice Maynard Crowder and Nell Cunningham Crower.
Mrs. Crowder was a graduate of Cotaco High School and the University of Alabama and a loyal “Roll Tide” fan. She worked side by side with her mother, Nell, in the operation of the Crowder Farm through 1972. She was active in the Talucah community and one of the charter members of the Talucah Volunteer Fire Department. She helped form and was also an active member in the local Community Watch. It was during this time that she became known as the “Sheriff of Talucah.” She was a member of Talucah Presbyterian Church and co-authored a book on the history of Talucah. She was very active in the Genealogy Society and served on numerous committees throughout Morgan County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Grant Turney.
She is survived by her only son, Lonnie Joe Turney and his special friend, Sonya Swader and her family; two grandchildren, Robert Grant Turney and Marlene Turney Whiteley and husband Charlie; and a great-grandchild, Tyler Grant Whiteley.
She was also unofficially adopted by the Gaines family of Talucah and leaves two adopted brothers, Hershel and Waymon; and an adopted sister, Charlene.
