Aug. 1, 1962 – The Rev. Connor Lundy, minister of Hartselle First Christian, is currently in the midst of a revival at Piney Grove church, Falkville 1.
Aug. 1, 1962 – According to an AP story out of Arizona published today, an Arizona woman plans to travel outside the U.S. to have an abortion since she is unable to have one legally in this country.
Aug. 1, 1962 – The Earl McCaig family is currently vacationing in Jacksonville, Fla.
Aug. 2, 1962 – Rocket scientist Werner von Braun says that he will turn over a collection of his papers and mementos to the Huntsville Public Library.
Aug. 2, 1962 – An L&N Railroad overpass is to be built on Thompson Road southeast of Hartselle at a cost of $41,649. The contract was awarded today.
Aug. 2, 1962 – A 16-year-old boy has been arrested by ABC officers and sheriff’s deputies for operating a 1,000-gallon still near Danville.
Aug. 2, 1962 – Reggie Lowery of Danville has been promoted to airman first class in the U.S. Air Force. He is presently posted at Hunter AFB, Ga.
Aug. 2, 1962 – Jimmy Yarbrough, local TV dealer, is being honored by RCA with trips to its plants in Indianapolis and Bloomington, Ind., beginning today. Mr. Yarbrough was one of the first men in this area to be certified to do color TV work.
Aug. 2, 1962 – The annual camp meeting began at the Hartselle tabernacle today. Sherman Powell is president of the camp association. It will continue through Aug. 12. A few of the original families that helped start the camp meeting and continue active in it include the Jones, Maples, Orrs, Penns, Powells, Teagues, and Waldsmiths
Aug. 2, 1962 – A committee has been established to study expanding the Tennessee Valley trade school into a junior college so young people from this area won’t have to leave home in order to have at least two years of higher education. (This was the origin of what ultimately became Calhoun Community College.)
Aug. 3, 1962 – Local George Wallace supporters are now selling ads to business and industry as well as county and city governments that will appear in his official inaugural program. He will be formally elected in November. (It is expected that firms hoping to do business with the state will purchase ads.)
Aug. 4, 1962 – Mr. and Mrs. John David Sample are the proud parents of a new baby daughter born today.
Aug. 4, 1962 – C. A. Culver’s Sale Barn in Falkville was decimated by fire this morning. Damage was estimated at $12,000.
Aug. 5, 1962 – Famed Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe, age 36, was found dead in bed at her Brentwood home today. The cause of Miss Monroe’s death is believed to be an overdose of sleeping pills.
Aug. 5, 1962 – Sgt. Bobby Ray Hicks is back at the Ft. Sumter Smith Air Force installation following a tour of duty in France.
Aug. 6, 1962 – The long-time manager (15 years) of the Joe Wheeler EMC, Floyd Anderson of Hartselle, was fired by the co-op board at a special meeting in Moulton tonight. The vote against Mr. Anderson was 7-1, Burl Vest of Falkville being his only supporter. Jimmie Davis, also of Hartselle, will serve as interim manager.
Aug. 6, 1962 – Members of the Hartselle branch of the American Legion auxiliary met with their Moulton and Decatur counterparts tonight in a social on the patio of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sherrill, 8 Oak Lane.
Aug. 7, 1962 – Federal highway money has been withheld from Alabama because the state highway director has been serving simultaneously as the state Democratic Party chairman. This mixing of politics and administration is forbidden by federal law.
