Girls learn fundamentals during basketball camp

The Hartselle High School girls basketball team hosted its girls basketball camp from Tues., May 28 through Thur., May 30, in the new HHS gym.
About 54 girls attended the camp this year, which is more than usual. This was only the second year the girls’ camp was separate from the boys’ camp. For the first time, the camp was held from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. instead of earlier in the morning.
Camp director and HHS girls basketball head coach Gary Orr said the time might change back next year depending on how the players felt about the afternoon camp.
Current players taught the campers ball handling, passing, shooting and defensive techniques. Gotcha and free-throw contests were held each day with prizes for winners. Coaches instructed through drills, group instruction and scrimmages.
Campers received free Pepsi each day and a free camp T-shirt. One lucky camper won a free supply of Pepsi for a year.
Orr said the camp benefits both the current players and the younger girls.
“We put on the camp so the current players can spend some time with the younger girls,” Orr said. “Hopefully this helps us recruit more girls into the basketball program, too, or any girls athletics here at Hartselle,” Orr said.
The camp staff included Coach Orr, HHS girls JV coach Jamie Roden, HJHS girls head coach Christy Ferguson as well as HHS varsity and JV players.
