Shop for vegetables locally
There’s nothing better than having fresh vegetables on your table every night, especially when they come from out of your own garden.
Of course, all of us don’t have time or the resources to have our own backyard garden, but you can get fresh local vegetables every day in downtown Hartselle.
The Hartselle Farmer’s Market on Sparkman Street is usually open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but the local farmers usually set up around 7:30 a.m. and stay until they sell out or around 2 p.m.
Some sellers come every day, but some farmers only sell every other day.
The Farmer’s Market has not seen a lot of customers since the start of the summer, but business has slowly started to grow in the last couple of weeks, as more crops begin to come in.
This year’s unseasonably cool weather of late spring has negatively affected many crops, making business at the Farmer’s Market slow this season.
As the temperatures heat up over the next few weeks, we should be seeing more crops come in. With the way we’ve been getting rainfall this year, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a large crop come in when they do start.
“Lots of crops are about two weeks late this year because of the weather,” Henry Springer told the Enquirer in a recent story. “Normally I have green beans, cabbage, onions, squash and okra by this time, but so far I’m only selling squash and green beans. I should have peas and tomatoes soon. They are a little late, too.”
So if you want some fresh veggies, don’t go to the supermarket. Go down to the Farmer’s Market and support our local farmers. The taste is usually better than what you can get at the chain stores.
Not only that, you’ll be helping out local farmers in our community.
