Funeral for Robson Slater 76, of Cherokee Ridge, Union Grove, will be Friday, Aug. 2, at Arab First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with Kenny Baskins officiating. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. at the church before service.
Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Herring Cemetery in the Massey community on Nanceford Road. Peck Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mr. Slater died Sun., July 28, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was a former member of The Church of England and a correct member of Arab United Methodist Church. He loved playing golf, traveling the world, cutting up with friends and playing with his grandchildren. During his career, he worked for Western N.D., The Boeing Company (Seattle, Wash.,) Canadair (St. Laurent Province of Quebec. Canada), LTV (Camden, Ark.,) United Technology Corporation (Huntsville) and Summa Technologies (Huntsville). His entire career was spent in engineering either as manager or director. He was medically discharged by the Royal Air Force.
He was born in Bircoats, England on April 3, 1937, and his early years were spent in Rugby Warwickshire, England. He went to East Warwickshire College of Further Education where he was awarded a mechanical engineering degree by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, Apprenticeship with British Thomson-Houston Company, Rugby. In 1960, he was awarded the Higher National Certificate Mechanical Engineering awarded by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in conjunction with the Ministry of Education. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robson Boston and Jean Ostle Slater and a granddaughter, Jaden Jeannette Coppens.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Vest Slater; two daughters, Suzanne Horn and husband J.L. of Camden, Ark., Andrea Coppens and husband Dom, of Owens Cross Roads; grandchildren, Nicki Clark and husband Reid of Hot Springs, Ark., Zack Poindexter and wife Christy of El Dorado, Ark., Jasmine and Journey Coppens of Owens Cross Roads; a brother, Eric Slater and wife Pat of Devon, England; great-grandchildren, Trevor Graves and Trenton Poindexter of El Dorado, Ark., Evan and Lainey Clark of Hot Springs, Ark.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews of England; sister-in-law, Frances Rowe and husband Paul III of Falkville; special niece and nephew, Sallye R. Swafford and husband Mike of Hartselle and Paul Rowe IV and wife Mandy of Falkville; special great-niece, Maeleigh Rowe and great-nephew, Brennan Swafford.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Diabetic Association Alabama Office, 3918 Montclair Road, Suite 218, Birmingham, AL 35213 or to the building fund of Arab United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 470, Arab, AL 35016.
