Ricky Legg

A Celebration of Life Service will be held by his family, Sept. 29 for Mr. Ricky Legg, 61, who passed away Sept. 9 at his residence. The service will be held at the Warehouse Coffee Shop at 315 Main St. W.

He was born Dec. 3, 1956, in Morgan County to Floyd Lamar Legg and Helen Faye Vest Legg. He was employed by General Motors as an auto repair technician. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Kay Legg; three daughters, Stacy Brown (Jason), Stacey Hodge (Heath) and Monica Pair (Jeff); one brother, Tony Legg; one sister, Janice Russell (Lonnie); nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

 

Charles Wayne Nelson

Decatur

 

Funeral service for Charles Wayne Nelson, 71, was Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at First Independant Methodist Church (Flint) with the Rev. Hal Daigre officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr. Nelson died Sept. 8. He was born March 16, 1947, in Morgan County to Quimby A. Nelson and Elsie Curbow Nelson. Charles was treasurer and a founding member of the Flint Volunteer Fire Department. He served his country in the United States Air Force. He was a member and served on the Board of Directors of the Morgan County Volunteer Firefighters Association and served as a Flint City police officer and a Lawrence County sheriff’s deputy. He was employed prior to retirement as a security officer for the Lurleen B. Wallace Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include one sister, Becky Turner (Clay), Decatur; two nieces, Bonita Riddle (Jonathan) and Kayla Jenson (Jake); three great-nieces and three great-nephews.

Pallbearers were Flint Volunteer Fire Department members and members of the Morgan County Firefighters Association.

 

Ann Rachel Puckett Henderson

Danville

 

Funeral service for Ann Rachel Puckett Henderson was Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at Johnson Chapel UMC with the Rev. Tom Salter officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Henderson died Sept. 11 at her residence. She was born May 28, 1928, in Morgan County to Reuben Puckett and Mattie Kirby Puckett. She was a teacher for 36 years, with the last 30 years of her

tenure at Decatur City School System. She was a member of Johnson Chapel United Methodist Church and was a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Decatur. She was preceded in death by her husband, Quitman Henderson, her parents, one sister and eight brothers.

The family would like to say a special “thanks” to Hospice of the Valley and to Jennifer Warren, Evita Williams, Rosemary Orr, Cathy Peterson and Regina Orr, the sitters who showed so much care and compassion for Mrs. Henderson.

Survivors include one son, David Henderson (Sheree), Danville; two grandchildren, Jason Henderson (Kelly), Danville, and Kirk Henderson (McKenzie), Danville; and three great-grandchildren, Callie Henderson, Anslea Henderson and Kinley Henderson.

In lieu of flowers and food, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice of the Valley.

 

Don Pouncey

Hartselle

 

Funeral services for Donald Gene Pouncey were held Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church in Hartselle.

Sept. 10, Don Pouncey, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away suddenly and entered his eternal home at the age of 65 years.

Don Pouncey, son of the late Pete and Helen Pouncey, was born July 9, 1953, in Enterprise, Miss. A graduate of Enterprise High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education from The University of Southern Mississippi. He later went on to earn a specialist degree in educational

leadership at Alabama A&M University.

Before moving to Hartselle in 1980, Don began his teaching career in Shelby County; however, Hartselle is where he spent the majority of his 30-plus years in education and athletics. He began his coaching career in Hartselle as an assistant football coach. He took over as head basketball coach in 1985, where he spent nine seasons coaching before beginning his career in administration in 1994.

In his last season with the Tigers, his team had one of the most successful seasons in school history, topped off by winning the 5A Boys Basketball State Championship.

He was born to be a coach and educator. During the span of his career he impacted many students’ lives. He truly had a passion for serving his community and was an active member at First Christian Church, serving as an elder.

After his retirement in 2013, Don enjoyed gardening and giving back to his church and community, and one of his favorite pastimes was attending and supporting Hartselle sporting events.

Don will be forever remembered by his wife Mitzi and their daughter, Allyson (Parker); grandson Jacob Tosti; brothers Alvin Pouncey (Becky) and Curt Pouncey (Cythia); sister-in-law Alice Pouncey; and his

nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Helen Pouncey; son, Zach Tosti; and brother, Ken Pouncey.

Pallbearers were Dustin Stephenson, Danny Stephenson, Dylan Stephenson, Doug Stephenson, Scottie Davis, Brad Davis, Jim Berry and Jerry Reeves.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to either The Don Pouncey General Athletic Fund to benefit Hartselle City Schools athletics or to the First Christian Church in Hartselle. Checks for the athletic fund can be made to Hartselle City Schools and mailed to Hartselle Board of Education.

 

Mahlon A. Hartselle Jr.

Hartselle

 

Mahlon A. Hartselle Jr. passed away Sept. 6 in Brentwood, Tenn.

He was born May 20, 1928, in Hartselle, the oldest of six children, to the late Nellie Kate and Mahlon A. Hartselle Sr. He was preceded in death by Jean Praytor Hartselle, his beloved wife with whom he had 50 years of marriage; wife Jackie Sandoe Hartselle, to whom he was married for 11 years; brother Ted Hartselle; sister Linda Fowler; and sister Amelia Crawford.

Mahlon grew up in Hartselle and graduated from Morgan County High School. From his earliest years, Mahlon was industrious, taking the initiative to help his family make its living with a cow and chickens as well as an acre of garden, or “truck patch,” that produced all they could eat and enough leftover for sale to the public and canning for the next winter.

At the age of 14, he bought his first airplane, which he flew until he joined the Army Air Corp, serving in Europe from June 16, 1946, to June 16, 1949.

After his military service, Mahlon returned to Hartselle and married Jean, his childhood sweetheart. Mahlon entered the corporate management world in 1950, which carried him and his family to 13 different cities throughout the U.S. during the next 38 years while working with four national companies.

During his early working years, he also attended Athens College and the University of Georgia.

Mahlon was employed by Allstate Insurance for 12 years as a sales manager and as the national marketing manager for auto insurance throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 1969 he joined Nationwide Insurance Company, from which he retired in 1988.

Mahlon had a lifelong passion for reading, history and travel (22 foreign countries on five continents) and never hesitated to share a good story.

Mahlon is survived by his children, Mary Lynne (Eli) Capilouto, Mimi (Jim) Steele and Art (Glenda) Hartselle; five grandchildren, Amy (Rich) Hawkins, David (Kiley) Steele, Heather (Cliff) Pitts, Aaron (Carter) Hartselle and Emily Capilouto; and 10 great grandchildren, Maya, Emily, Olivia and Eliza Hawkins, Cooper and Foster Ingalls, Jacob and Lindey Steele and Micah and Eli Pitts.

The family wants to express their deepest appreciation for the loving care provided by Theresa Cannon, Joyce Seay and Patricia Webb over the past three years.

A memorial service will be held Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Hartselle Depot, located at 110 Railroad St., Hartselle. Peck Funeral Home will be handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathies may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research.

 

Docia Ivanell Sudduth Cleghorn

Hartselle

 

Docia Ivanell Sudduth Cleghorn, 84, passed from this life in the arms of her Lord and Savior Sept. 13.

She was a loving faithful member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She was loved by all who knew her. She lived her life as a godly saint. She showed love and grace to each and every person she met and always was ready to witness about God to all. She truly loved God and her family and made everyone welcome in her home. She would always make sure you left full of grace, love and food.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ella Sudduth; brother Hershel Sudduth; sister Louise Bartlett; daughter-in-law Marie Cleghorn; and granddaughter Kelly LeighAnn Thomas.

Funeral service was Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Sammy Evans and the Rev. Kenneth Sudduth officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was in Smith School House Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Bobby Ray Cleghorn; three sons, Dennis Cleghorn, David Cleghorn (Melinda) and Darin Cleghorn (Monday); three daughters, Deliah Bonner (Jimmy), Donna Cleghorn and Deborah Boucher (Victor); one brother, Kenneth Suddeth (Mary); 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in memory of Ivanell Cleghorn to Pleasant Valley Baptist Church at 550 Bird Springs Road, Hartselle, AL 35640.

 

Draton O. Fowler

Laceys Spring

 

Funeral service for Draton O. Fowler, 68, will be Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be Sept. 21 from 6-8 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home.

Mr. Fowler died Sept. 16 at his residence. He was born Feb. 19, 1950, in Morgan County to William Oliver Fowler and Martha Marie Compton Fowler. He was employed by the Huntsville City School System prior to his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sharon Jenkins.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah H. Fowler; two sons, Chris Fowler (Janice) and Tim Fowler; one daughter, Amber Fowler Long (Stephen); five grandchildren, Shayla Fowler, Jennifer Morton, Ian Dile, Victoria Fowler and Bama Long-Fowler; and one on the way.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

 

Mary Francis Lawrimore

Hartselle

 

A memorial service for Mary Francis Lawrimore, 76, will be held at a later date by her family at Warehouse Coffee Shop in Hartselle.

Mrs. Lawrimore died Sept. 14 at Decatur Morgan Hospital. She was born July 24, 1942, in Morgan County to Arthur Aaron Brown and Gracie Beatrice Brown. She was employed as a cook prior to her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Lawrimore; her parents; three sons, Arthur Joe Barber, Ricky Gene Barber and Gary Dean Barber; five brothers, Charles, Paul, Jack, Henry and James Brown; and five sisters, Elizabeth Brown, Dorthey Brown, Lilly May Brown, Linda Brown and Florence

Brown.

Survivors include two sons, Paul Douglas Lawrimore (Donna) and Steven Barber (Holly); one sister, Pat Brown; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
