Toys for Tots kicks off toy drive first week of October

The Morgan and Lawrence County Toys for Tots will begin taking donations for the coming season the first week of October. Toys for Tots distributes the donations to local organizations that then distribute the toys to families in need.

Sherry Sparks, coordinator of the Morgan and Lawrence County Toys for Tots, has been involved with the organization for seven years. Sparks said the organizations that distribute the toys have told her stories of the impact they have for the community.

“They tell me stories about moms in line that are crying as they shop for new toys for their kids,” Sparks said.

Sparks said the donation season kicks off at the start of October and ends the first week of December. The toys are needed for newborns to are 12. “We are always low on the toys for 10-12 and for babies. People always think about the 3-8-year-olds,” Sparks said.

Registration for help is conducted through the distributing organizations and can be found on the Toys for Tots website. There are specific days and times for registration, but Sparks said the earlier the family registers, the better.

There will be more than 30 donation sites throughout Morgan and Lawrence County, with limited sites staying open past the normal cut-off date. A monetary donation can also be made directly to the local chapter at https://marinetoysfortots.salsalabs.org/localdonationform/index.html?fun_local_campaign_designation=AL-Decatur.
