The Brewer Patriots defeated the Guntersville Wildcats to get another region win, improving to 4-1 in region play and 6-1 overall. The Patriots led the entire game with the defense leading the way by allowing only one score and 193 total yards of offense for the night.
The game started with a quick defensive stop by both teams. On Guntersville’s second possession they would threaten to score but were denied when Brewer’s Levi Rice had a momentum-changing interception on the Patriot’s 5-yard line. He would return the interception 86 yards to the Guntersville 9 and set up Brewer’s first score of the evening. It would take only two plays for Patrick Johnson to run it in and give the Patriots a 7-0 lead with 1:32 left in the first quarter. The Patriots would score again in the second quarter after another interception by Kris Bramlett. After the interception, the Patriots would take six plays before Johnathan Morgan would score on a 3-yard rush and give the Patriots a 14-0 going into the half.
Brewer received the ball to start the second half but turned the ball over to Guntersville on the third play of the drive on a fumbled snap. Guntersville would get their only score of the night two plays later with a perfectly executed hook and lateral play making the score 14-8 with 10:23 left in the third quarter. Brewer would answer quickly on its next possession when Orlando “Tee” Whatley would score on a 61-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Johnson giving the Patriots a 22-8 lead with 3:45 left in the third quarter. After a couple of punts by each team, Brewer would score its last touchdown of the evening on a 2-yard run by Tanner Cobb giving the Patriots a 29-8 with 11:58 left in the game. Caleb Gullion would tack on a field goal for Brewer late in the fourth quarter making the final score Brewer 32 and Guntersville 8.
Brewer is currently in a two-way tie with East Limestone for second place in 5A Region 8 and will travel to play them this Friday at 7 p.m.
