How closely are you following Jesus?
By Todd Barrier
Recently I heard of the concept of the rabbi’s dust. It is a way to describe how closely the disciple or trainee of a rabbi would follow behind.
Here is an explanation I found: Disciples were known for walking behind their rabbi, following him so closely that they would become covered with the dust kicked up from his sandals.
The disciples were to be so much like their teacher, they would follow so close behind to be able to mimic everything he did. This is an idea that should sound familiar to Christians, disciples of Christ.
We are to live the type of spiritual and righteous life that was shown to us by Jesus. The Bible teaches we should follow Him just as closely as those ancient Jews did to their rabbis to learn this way of life!
1 Peter 2:21 says, “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.” Luke 9:23 says, “And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’” John 10:27 tells us, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
These are just a few verses that teach us to follow after Jesus. We should be covered in the dust of our savior as we follow behind Him.
