Are you thankful for spiritual freedom?
By Todd Barrier
Don’t you know there are just certain times of year when preachers have clichés ready for their Sunday sermons? Those special times of year, like certain holidays, seem like they are just made for a good old-fashioned cliché.
The Fourth of July, which we celebrated this past weekend, is one of those.
Spiritual freedom versus physical freedoms – a sermon-writing preacher’s dream!
In our country, we spend so much time and effort on the subject of our physical freedoms – and rightfully so. What a blessing our freedoms are! However, do we put as much focus on our freedom in Christ?
After all, it’s our spiritual freedom that will last forever and can’t be taken from us by anyone. The same can’t be said for physical freedom.
Many people died protecting our freedom in Christ, as well – including, of course, Christ himself.
In 2 Cor. 3:17 the Bible says, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” What an assurance from God, that no matter where we are, if in Christ, we have freedom!
John 8:32 says, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” The truth of God’s Word sets us free, forever, from all of the worries that worldly freedom can’t.
So as we focus on our country’s freedom this month, let’s not forget the freedom that truly sets us free! Are you celebrating and being thankful for your spiritual freedom every day?
