Morgan County District Attorney Scott Anderson has announced he will seek reelection to serve his third term in the office.
Anderson was first elected in 2010. Prior to serving as district attorney, he maintained a private law practice for 19 years and was engaged in civil, domestic and criminal law. He also served as a municipal prosecutor for 10 years.
Under Anderson’s leadership, the district attorney’s office has tried and prosecuted a large and diverse caseload, including capital murder, murder, other violent crimes and child abuse cases.
Being no stranger the courtroom, Anderson has personally and successfully prosecuted more than 20 capital and non-capital murder cases, as well as a large number of rape, robbery and other top-level crimes. Anderson also established the Pretrial Intervention Program, which provides alternatives to prosecution for some defendants and expedites the recovery of restitution for crime victims.
Anderson has also spearheaded the Restitution Recovery Unit so that restitution, among other financial obligations of criminal defendants that are long overdue, is paid in a timelier manner.
“When I first sought this office, I made one promise, and that was to work hard,” Anderson said. “As your district attorney, I will continue to work hard for the people of Morgan County. I will also continue to take a tough stand against crime and make sure justice is served while also promoting fairness.
“It is an honor to work for the people of Morgan County,” he added. “I am proud of the work that my office does, and we will continue to fight for what is right. I look forward to continuing to serve the people of Morgan County as their district attorney.”
Anderson is a native of Morgan County. He is a 1983 graduate of Austin High School, a 1988 graduate of the University of Alabama, where he earned a business degree, and a 1991 graduate of the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, where he earned his Juris Doctorate.
He is a member and past president of the Alabama District Attorneys Association and the local Fraternal Order of Police. He is president of the Board of Directors for the Morgan County Child Advocacy Center.
He and his wife Cindy Segars Anderson have two sons, Evan and Jabe, one daughter, Charlee Cooper, and a son-in-law, Taylor Cooper. The Andersons worship at First Bible Church of Decatur.
