Governor signs constitutional carry into law

Gun owners in Alabama will soon be able to carry concealed firearms without first obtaining state permits.
Gov. Kay Ivey this past Thursday signed HB-272, also known as the constitutional carry bill, into law. It will take effect Jan. 1, 2023.
“Unlike states who are doing everything in their power to make it harder for law abiding citizens, Alabama is reaffirming our commitment to defending our Second Amendment rights,” Ivey said. “I have always stood up for the rights of law-abiding gun owners, and I am proud to do that again today.”
The bill revises certain restrictions related to owning and carrying a firearm, including doing away with the permit requirement. According to Yellowhammer News, there were 40 co-sponsors for the bill, which passed in the House of Representatives in February and made its way from the Senate to the governor’s desk this past week.
Permits for the sake of reciprocity in other states will still be available to citizens.
Alabama is the 22nd state in the country to pass similar legislation.
