Barkley Bridge holds summer STEAM camp

“Where there’s a will, there’s a wave,” was the theme for Barkley Bridge Elementary School’s fifth annual summer STEAM held this past week.
Students collaborated, using the engineering design process, to create a beach shelter prototype from recycled materials to protect stick figures they created from ultra violet activated beads. They manually pool raced Sphero ball robots across a pool of water. Students participated in a Taste of the Sea, where they taste-tested various treats from the deep blue sea. Many students discovered they love seaweed, shrimp, crab, coconut and fish. Students also upcycled water bottles to create cartesian jellyfish divers.
Fun was had by all when students learned about water slides and friction. Each group created a waterslide including constraints of 18 inches in height with three bead sliders moving freely from the top to the bottom with a hill and a curve.
As always, a favorite was students racing down a 100-foot tarp. Tie-dye science wave T-shirts made for a great take away. Jamie Dutton, Kim Jared, library team volunteers and student volunteers hosted the event full of fun summer learning.
