Cross-Country teams qualify for state championships
It was a good week for local cross-country teams at their sectionals. Four schools had runners qualify for state championships on Saturday, while Priceville’s boys and girls teams and the Hartselle and Brewer girls’ teams qualified.
Priceville
The boys’ and girls’ teams finished second to qualify for the state championship.
The girls, who fell two points shy of a first-place finish, were led by Elizabeth Cain’s second place finish. Rounding out the girls were AK Hopkins in eighth, Aubrey Weddington in 12th, Kaitlyn Taylor in 13th and Mae Vick in 23rd.
The boys were led by Adam “Woody” Taylor, who finished first with a come-from-behind win. Maclain Lawson finished fifth, while Luke Hood was sixth. Hayden Denson and Zach Irvine also scored points for the team with their finishes.
Hartselle
The Lady Tigers finished second to qualify for the state championships. Emily Davis (10th), Grace Goldman (11th), Elena Johnston (12th), Kaylee Thigpen (15th) and Gabriella Goldman (16th) led the way.
Sellars Brown, Ethan Mendendorp and Owen Merrit had top 15 finishes to qualify for state.
Brewer
The Lady Patriots finished fourth to qualify for the state championships. Rose Betts and her sister Autumn finished fourth and fifth to lead the team, while Erin Hurlburtt finished 16th.
Nathan Butler and Matthew Matkin of the boys’ team qualified for state with top 25 finishes.
Danville
Alyssa Brooks finished first for the Lady Hawks to qualify for the state championships. She won her race by 26 seconds over the nearest competitor. Teammates Josie Bailey finished 11th, while Maddie Sherrill and Ava Mause finished 23rd and 25th.
The state championships are Nov. 5 at the Oakville Indian Mounds in Lawrence County.
