Be joyful and exceedingly thankful
By Todd Barrier
Many times, when we think of the birth of Christ certain images or thoughts pop in our heads. Maybe it’s Mary and how she found out she would have a child. Maybe it’s Joseph and his reaction. Maybe it’s the star or the manger. Many people think of the wise men and the gifts they brought, the gold, frankincense and myrrh. Afterall, we give gifts this time of year to celebrate His birth. To me the most interesting part is what happened with the wise men before they even saw Jesus, as they were approaching where He was. In Matthew 2 it says “When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.”
Before they even saw Jesus, they were joyful, exceedingly so. If you continue reading it says that before they gave Him gifts, they entered the house and got down and worshipped Him. Before they ever saw Jesus, they were joyful and then immediately worshipped Him when they entered His house. It makes me think we ought to be joyful when thinking about approaching the throne of Jesus. Do we think about how awesome He is and what a privilege it is to come into His presence to worship Him? So, as we think about the gifts the wise men brought, let’s remember the gift He gave us, eternal life, and be joyful and exceedingly thankful.
