Newcomers to play significant role in high school football
With the AHSAA football season kicking off next week, it is time to look at a few newcomers who will impact local teams this season.
Some newcomers are transfers, while a couple are new to the team. Let’s take a look at some impact newcomers.
Hartselle
Christian Baulding
Position: Nose Tackle/ Defensive Tackle | Grade: Senior | Old School: James Clemens
The 6’3, 295lb defensive lineman looks to make a big difference this year for the Tigers. He will combine with junior Porter Simmons and another transfer, Andrew Carroll, to form one of the biggest defensive lines that Hartselle has fielded in recent memory.
Andrew Carroll
Position: Defensive End | Grade: Junior | Old School: Cullman
The 6’5, 260lb defensive lineman joins the Tigers from one of their most hated rivals, Cullman. He will team with Simmons to form tall, athletic bookends on the defensive line that will be difficult for teams to handle.
“Baulding and Carroll have impressed the staff and their teammates so far,” said Hartselle coach Bryan Moore. “They have come in and fit into the system and will make be difference makers for the Tigers.”
Priceville
Jake England
Position: Quarterback | Grade: Senior | Old School: Hartselle
England takes over at quarterback for the Priceville Bulldogs. He previously played defensive back for Hartselle. He has not taken an offensive snap since his freshman year. He will be called on to lead the young Bulldogs, who are replacing several starters on offense and defense. According to Coach Foster, England has shown outstanding leadership during his short time with us. He will not be called on to throw the ball often, but he has a strong arm and a good touch.
Brewer
Cam Ballinger
Position: Wide Receiver | Grade: Freshman
The 6’3 freshman wide receiver is fighting for playing time this season. His size and athletic ability will make it difficult for teams to guard him with smaller defensive backs.
“Ballinger is going to be an impact player at Brewer the next few years,” said Brewer coach Matt Plunkett. “ I am very excited about his potential. He has good size, can outjump players, and has amazing hands.”
Danville
Christian Rodriquez
Position: Running Back | Grade: Junior
The junior is returning to the football team after not playing last season. He will provide a different dynamic at running back that the Hawks haven’t had recently. Danville Coach Andro Williams says Rodriquez has a tremendous football IQ and plays fast.
Falkville
Asher Lentz
Position: Running Back | Grade: Freshman
The freshman joins a talented running back group but could make a difference as he gains more confidence throughout the season. Lentz, who Falkville coach Seth Ward said may be the fastest player on the team, will have to wait his turn but look for him to make a difference when he gets his chance.
