Local homesteading event draws crowds eager to learn, connect

The Morgan County Extension Office recently hosted a gathering of nearly 100 participants who flocked to a half-day program entitled “Homesteading on a Half-Acre.”  

This event, held Sept. 9, proved to be a resounding success, drawing attendees from far and wide who shared a common interest in homesteading and self-sufficiency. 

The central theme of the event, according to extension agent Brett Crow, revolved around the idea that homeowners with even the tiniest plots of land could take meaningful steps to bolster their food production and preservation efforts, promoting self-reliance and sustainability. Crow said the program featured a diverse array of educational stations that ran concurrently, ensuring that each attendee could tailor their experience to their specific interests and needs. 

Topics ranged from the art of beekeeping to the nuances of managing backyard flocks, and from sourcing local meats to mastering various methods of canning and food preparation. Garden enthusiasts soaked up valuable insights into soil management and vegetable gardening, while fruit production aficionados explored techniques for bountiful harvests. 

While adults immersed themselves in these educational opportunities, the younger crowd was far from neglected. Children were treated to a dedicated track designed just for them, offering an array of engaging and educational activities. Aspiring young sewers delved into the basics of sewing, wildlife enthusiasts learned about local fauna and 4-H participants had the unique opportunity to grade and evaluate eggs, enhancing their agricultural knowledge. The interactive exercise games proved to be a hit, Crow added, keeping the kids entertained and informed. Furthermore, youngsters had the unforgettable chance to witness a live cow milking demonstration, providing them with a firsthand look at the dairy industry. 

Crow said the inaugural event was made possible through the concerted efforts of numerous individuals and organizations. The organizers extend their heartfelt appreciation to all those who contributed to its success. Special thanks were extended to the No Fences Cowboy Church, which generously provided the perfect venue to accommodate the enthusiastic crowd.  

Crow said plans are in motion to hold the program again next year.
