Hartselle Utilities reminds community April is safe digging month

April is recognized by Congress and most Governors across the U.S. as National Safe Digging Month (NSDM). 

Because it’s the time of year when temperatures increase in many parts of the country and spring digging projects begin, April is an important time to remember how important it is to contact 811 at least a few days before putting a shovel in the ground. 

David Taylor works as the sewer system controller at Hartselle Utilities. Taylor said calling 811 before any excavation project is an important first step.  

 “These services are free to anyone, and they will contact all parties involved with city, county or power supply companies,” Taylor said. “It is important to first protect the life and health of our customers and will also help protect private property from being damaged.” 

Taylor stressed the significance of adhering to state laws regarding excavation. “It is a state law to call the 811 Call Before You Dig services,” he added. “The importance of this service is to have all parties with their respective utility to be located within 48 hours. This will help prevent any life-or-death situations from happening. This law was put in place to help protect people and property. You are subject to being fined or imprisonment for not following the guidelines of the Call Before You Dig laws.” 

Bo Cowart, gas system operator at the utility company, echoed Taylor’s sentiments regarding the potential hazards associated with digging near gas mains.  

“Digging near or on a gas main could have a tremendous safety impact on our customers, their homes and/or businesses,” Cowart stated. “If the laws are not followed, it could lead to death or a loss of property. Our number one goal is to protect life and property.” 

Throughout April, Hartselle Utilities will continue its efforts to raise awareness about safe excavation practices. “Safe digging isn’t just a recommendation; it’s the law,” Taylor emphasized. “By working together and prioritizing safety, we can ensure a secure environment for everyone in our community.”
