Celebrating five years of knowing and loving Trent

Five years ago, on a warm evening in May, May 26th to be exact, my life changed forever in the most delightful way. Reflecting on that fateful first date with my husband brings a smile to my face every time, reminding me of God’s divine providence working in my life and His unending love.

Our story begins at the Flint Church of Christ, a place that would become “where it all began.” On that evening, I arrived with butterflies in my stomach, knowing I was about to meet someone special. Little did I know, my husband-to-be was running late, his tardiness sparking an amusing episode that has since become part of our lore.

His late arrival didn’t go unnoticed. The church security team, vigilant as ever, watched our initial interaction with eagle eyes, unsure if he was truly invited based on my initial reaction. Weeks later, they confessed their concern, thinking perhaps he was an uninvited guest. I assured them that we were both simply nervous, each trying to make a good impression on the other.

From that somewhat awkward beginning, our first date unfolded beautifully. We shared a delightful dinner at Mellow Mushroom in Decatur. Forever a Clutz, I dropped a piece of pizza on my green dress. Thankfully the stain came out because I still love that dress and am wearing it tonight to church … to Flint and to dinner at Mellow Mushroom.

After dinner, we decided to take a walk at Rhodes Ferry Park. I can’t remember the things we talked about, but I remember being at ease and comfortable, feeling like I had known Trent for years. He was and continues to be unlike anyone I’ve ever known. He’s patient and kind, generous and forgiving. I am a better person because of his love and influence in my life.

By the end of the evening, as we said our goodbyes, I was sold. Over the next two weeks, we saw each other ten times, each date further cementing the connection we had felt that first night. Our relationship moved swiftly, but it felt right. He proposed at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and we married the following June.

Five years later, I look back on those early days with fondness and gratitude. My husband is the best thing about this life, a partner who has brought joy, stability and endless love into my world. Our journey has been filled with laughter, adventures and unwavering support for one another.

As we celebrate this milestone, I am reminded of the beautiful unpredictability of life and how a seemingly ordinary day can turn into the beginning of a lifelong adventure.

Here’s to many more years of love and happiness, to the memories we’ve created and the ones yet to come. Happy five-year anniversary, Trent. Thank you for being my partner, my confidant and my greatest joy.
