Common grace

Idon’t mean to be preaching to you all today, but there’s something about God that I was reminded of that I don’t think gets talked about enough. I was taking a break from cutting the grass with our beat up, half-way runs, blades as dull as a pocket knife that’s been in the drawer for years lawnmower. Sweat was in my eyes and somehow the water in my bottle wasn’t near wet enough to quench my thirst.

Then as I sat under a shade tree thinking I very well may fall over dead, a light breeze blew.

It’s what us nerds call common grace; the little things that God did just because He loved His creation.

Like SEC Football. He didn’t have to do that, but He did anyway. He also didn’t have to let Dr.

Pepper taste so good or make Don Williams sing the way he did. He could have made a world without BBQ or fried catfish, but He didn’t. In all His goodness, He not only sent His son to die for those that believe in Him, but he also made a way for each of us to enjoy the little things in life and try to have a little taste of that goodness.

He gave us puppies and cornbread. He made honeysuckle so that we could smell His sweetness on an evening walk. He gave us windy country roads to drive down and little babies to giggle at the simplest of things. I’ve spent many a day sitting under a shade tree with a light breeze and the truth is there are few things in life that remind me of God more than the relief that comes on a cool summer breeze.

It’s sort of like the feeling you get when you take a deep breath after a long hard cry and know everything’s going to be ok. Just seconds before things felt unbearable, then it all came into perspective and you can breathe like normal again.

Anyway, I guess it’s time to get back at it. This grass ain’t gonna cut itself.
