Hartselle High theatre excels at Trumbauer District Festival
Hartselle High School Theatre made a stellar showing at the Walter Trumbauer District Theatre Festival, held at Decatur High School on Nov. 2. The team entered 39 individual and group events, earning 34 superior ratings and five excellent ratings. Of these, 32 events qualified for the state competition.
The troupe’s one-act performance of Silenced on Barbour Street by William Prenatta earned Best Scenic Design, Best Costumes and Best in Show honors. Individual accolades included Lily Norris and Laura Lundy being named to the All-Star Cast and Alivia Wiley winning Best Leading Performer among all one-act participants. The performance also qualified for the state competition.
The troupe will represent Hartselle High at the state festival Dec. 6-7 at the University of North Alabama.
In the dramatic duet acting category, Kate Meadows and CJ Janzig, along with Alivia Wiley and Jackson Lee Turner, qualified for state. Dramatic acting qualifiers included Laura Lundy, Jackson Lee Turner, Marley Roberts, Lily Norris, Anna Claire Dukeminier, Gavin Jensen and Mary Claire Culpepper.
In comedic acting, Harper Hughes earned state qualification, while Cooper Reid Estep advanced in the pre-1980 musical category. Dramatic musical qualifiers included Gunner Calhoun, Connor Wallace and Harper Hughes, while comedic musical performances by Clara Bass, Alivia Wiley, Riggs McLeod, Marley Roberts and Alana Travers also earned spots at state.
For duet musical performances, Alexiz Lawson and Lucas McMinemon, McMinemon and Phoenix Hughes and Clara Bass and Emma Gregory qualified. Kylee Little advanced in playwriting.
The team excelled in design categories as well. Skyler Fairchild qualified in properties design, Amelia Grigsby in puppet design and Izzy Smith-Hollin in both costume design and costume construction. Scenic design honors went to Sage Fairchild and Scarlet Poole.
Group acting ensembles qualifying included Brady Long, Cooper Reid Estep and Jack Turner; Emma Gregory, Lily Norris and Mary Claire Culpepper; and Alexis Lawson, Avie Broom, Kate Meadows and TJ Sanders. Group musical qualifiers featured Brady Long, Connor Wallace, Estep, McMinemon, Payton Fetner Hughes, as well as Alivia Wiley, Turner and Norris.
