Brewer’s Plunkett resigns after four seasons
For the Enquirer
Brewer Patriots head coach Matt Plunkett announced his resignation in a press release Feb. 27. He led the Patriots’ program for four years. “I have reached a point in my career where I feel the need to reset and reevaluate,” Plunkett said. “I want to take a long look in the mirror and evaluate my future. My number one objective is to draw closer to my Lord and savior.” Plunkett was hired in 2021 after leaving Locust Fork. He finished with a 13-28 record and one trip to the playoffs. The playoff appearance was Brewer’s first since 2018. His best year with the Patriots was 2022, when Brewer finished 5-6 with a playoff appearance.
“My decision is purely personal and professional,” he said. “Brewer High School football is better today than when I found it. We have accomplished some very strong goals as a team. We earned a state playoff spot in 2022. Our roster size has doubled over the last four seasons. We have a firm foundation of discipline and hard work in place.” Plunkett said he will remain at Brewer for the rest of the school year in whatever role he is needed.
