Hartselle Auburn club hosts former championship coach
Special to the Enquirer
The Hartselle Auburn Club met Feb. 25, hosting six-time National Champion Auburn equestrian coach Greg Williams, and former Auburn football walk-on and artist Stephen Malkoff. Williams is now the emeritus head coach of the team, after spending more than 20 years building the equestrian team into a varsity program. He spoke about the equestrian facilities at Auburn and how they are all mostly privately funded. Attendees learned that the horses belong to the school and when they ride at another school, they only have four minutes to warm up on their horses. He said road wins are huge. The Auburn Equestrian team hosts Georgia on Saturday for their last home stand for this season.
Malkoff spoke about being a linebacker for the Tigers in 1988 and getting to play in the Auburn Kansas game as a “wedge buster.” His journey from football to architecture school at AU to a popular artist was a long one, but he showed many of his prints and paintings of Auburn icons and has other SEC schools.
Virginia Howell updated us on her granddaughter, Julianne Huff, a current AU gymnast. The Auburn Gymnastics team beat Alabama in Coleman Coliseum last Saturday.
The dinner was catered by Chris and Dee Warnick at the Everything Now venue in downtown Hartselle.
