Hartselle Parks & Rec brings Carolina Shag to town with free dance class

    Staff Reports

Dust off those dancing shoes and get ready to shag. Hartselle Parks & Recreation is inviting residents to step onto the dance floor with its new Carolina Shag Dance Class, set to begin May 8.

Led by instructors Robin Haynes and Barbara Martin, the class will be held every Thursday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. through June 26, giving participants plenty of time to master the moves of this smooth, rhythm-filled Southern dance.

Designed for beginners ages 21 and up, the course will introduce dancers to the basic six-count step, along with essential moves like male and female underarm turns, the shag trail and the pivot. The Carolina Shag is a lead-follow couples dance, partners are preferred for the lessons but not required.

The class is free, but advance registration is required through the Hartselle Parks & Rec website at hartselle.recdesk.com. Attendees are encouraged to wear smooth-soled shoes for easy movement on the dance floor.

For more information, call Haynes at 256-694-6043.
