The help of your eighth graders won’t be forgotten
Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter for two purposes. First, to publicly thank the 2010-2011 eighth grade class at Hartselle Junior High School for their efforts in helping Flat Rock School. Flat Rock is an area that was hit hard by the April 27, 2011, storms, although you did not hear much about Flat Rock in the media. It is a small school in a very rural part of Jackson County. The school itself did not suffer major damage from the storm, but many of the students had damage to their homes or lost their homes completely. Flat Rock is a tight knit community and went to work immediately setting up aide stations for people who suffered loss in the storms. The town was an example of what you can do when disaster strikes.
The eighth grade class heard of the plight of the town of Flat Rock and wanted to help the students of Flat Rock School. Through their efforts every student at Flat Rock School was provided all the school supplies the would need for the entire school year. Each student received a backpack filled with the necessary supplies plus a monetary donation to the school. It was an awesome experience to see the smiles on the faces of the students and parents as they received their supplies. All this was made possible by the teachers and eighth grade students, for the most part strangers to the people of Flat Rock.
Secondly, I want the Hartselle community to know what special young men and women you have. We are always hearing about the students that are causing trouble, in trouble or are just plain trouble, but we seldom hear of the positive things our young people are doing. The students not only helped raise the money for the supplies, but several of them donated their day to come to Flat Rock to help give out the supplies. The impression made on Flat Rock students and community will never be forgotten.
Again, thanks for all you did. It was a great day at Flat Rock.
