Walters in running for Andalusia school job

Staff Reports, Hartselle Enquirer
Dr. Joe Walters, Crestline Elementary School principal, is one of five candidates being considered to lead the Andalusia City Schools System.
Andalusia City Schools Superintendent Pete Kelley is set to retire at the end of this calendar year, prompting the Andalusia Board of Education to search for his replacement. An independent board of consultants recently recommended five candidates, including Walters, out of 22 people who expressed interest in and 13 who completed the application process for the position.
Other candidates include two Andalusia candidates, Dr. Daniel Shakespeare and Bob Harry, and two other outside candidates, Dr. Beverly S. McAnulty, principal at Pinecrest High School International Baccalaureate School in Carthage, N.C. and Keith A. Stewart, superintendent of Bullock County Schools in Union Springs.
Board members elected to try and conduct all interviews Nov. 7-9 and Nov. 14 and 15. Walters' interview was scheduled for Nov. 8.
As part of the interview process, all candidates – including local – will tour all three schools in the system, have an opportunity to meet parents, students, and faculty members, and be interviewed in an open forum.
The board hopes to have a new superintendent in place by the beginning of January.
Walters was one of six candidates considered for Hartselle City Schools Superintendent earlier this year prior to the retirement of Dr. Lee Hartsell. Dr. Mike Reed, former superintendent of education in Butler County, was chosen for the position.
