May 6, 1960-The faculty of Hartselle Elementary School had these teachers in the 1959-60 school year: F. E. Burleson (principal), Emily Alexander, Gene Horton, Evelyn Howell, Helen Howell, Sue Holland, Janice James, Carolyn Logan, Ruby Newman, Rachel Oden, Frances Price, Ora Russell, Nell Sherrill, Luna Stover, Jewel Springfield, Bessie Summers, Ruth Thompson, Estelle White, and Lucille Wiggins. Many have summer plans which will include further education.
May 6, 1960-Ruth Gayle Cost, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Cost, will be graduated later this month from the University of Alabama with a BS in nursing.
May 6, 1960-A moonshine still was located by revenue officers this morning about a mile southwest of here. The still had two operators, one of which was captured and placed in the Morgan County jail.
May 7, 1960-In the thriving economy of today, many jobs are going begging. The head of the state employment service reports that there are approximately 2,500 slots that industries are trying to fill but unsuccessfully thus far.
May 7, 1960-A state senator has proposed doing away with quickie divorces by making the one-year residence requirement to obtain a divorce firm for all couples.
May 7, 1960-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., says the federal government is “all too slow to protect” the rights of black Americans.
May 7, 1960-Flint City residents are continuing to enjoy their new town hall. It is located on Hamaker Street in the Day Addition, adjacent to the railroad.
T. V. Day is mayor of the town. It cost about $9,000 to build.
May 7, 1960-Ads boast that the Studebaker Lark gets more miles per gallon than any other V-8-22.8 mpg. This was verified in the Mobilgas economy run.
May 8, 1960-Decoration Day was held at Moss Chapel Methodist Church today.
May 8, 1960-Hartselle Hospital held an open house this afternoon in observance of the start of National Hospital Week. Hospital staff escorted visitors through all portions of the hospital and clinic and explained various procedures the facility performs in the course of its work.
May 8, 1960-Jean Dunaway, a student at Falkville High, is currently en route to Cincinnati where she will compete in a cooking contest sponsored by the Kroger and Westinghouse companies.
May 9, 1960-Mrs. T. E. Wooodard, Eva 1, has been admitted as a patient at Baugh-Wiley-Smith Clinic in Decatur.
May 9, 1960—Morgan County government head Guy Roberts says the public can’t afford to buy summer uniforms for sheriff’s deputies.
This would require that each man get a $12.50 monthly raise and Roberts says the county doesn’t have the money to provide this.
May 9, 1960-Benford Luker is chairman of Red Oak Grove Methodist’s cemetery association. Alva Clements of Hartselle is a board member.
June 18, 1959-Jack Summerford, Danville 1, is a member of the American Shorthorn Association. The ASH was the first organization of its kind in America.
May 9, 1960—City officials are requesting that the state highway patrol devote more resources to Highway 36 (East Main) within the city limits. Residents point to speeding and reckless driving along this route.
May 10, 1960-MCHS beat Eva in baseball here this afternoon by the convincing score of 12-2. Doug Turney was the pitcher for six innings, yielding only a hit and a run. David Puckett pitched the remaining three innings, also giving up only one run but three hits. Hartselle’s bats were hot and Ralph Cash, Jimmy Speegle, John Warren, and pitcher Turney all got one or more homers. The Tigers’ record is now 6-1.
May 10, 1960-Robert McDonald passed away today. A member of First Methodist, his funeral will be Thursday at Johnson’s Chapel with the Revs. Eaton Stephenson and Warren Hamby officiating.
May 11, 1960-Several Hartselle Auburn alumni were in attendance tonight at an alumni banquet at the Decatur Country Club. The main honoree was basketball coach Joel Eaves whose team won the SEC championship during the season recently concluded.
May 11, 1960-Despite opposition from the tobacco companies, some scientists are asserting that smoking contributes to 80 percent of the lung cancer in American men.
Most evidence came from a study of Seventh Day Adventists whose religion forbids smoking.
May 12, 1960-Local gospel singing fans had a treat tonight as the two top singing groups, the Statesmen and the Blackwoods, appeared in a concert in the Decatur High School auditorium.
May 12, 1960-Popular Alabama gospel singer Rebe Gosden has been appointed a liquor agent by Brown-Forman Distillers at the request of the John Patterson gubernatorial administration.
