A look back
July 15, 1960-Hartselle Mayor John Burleson is telling friends and co-workers that, at least at this point, he is not planning on running for another term as head of the city government. Burleson was originally inaugurated as mayor more than a dozen years ago and has served continuously since that time. Prior to assuming the mayor’s office, he was a member of the city council. Incumbent councilmen Ollie Camp, S. E. Gibson, Loyd Logan, C. L. Orr, and Orville Tanner also have decisions to make about running for re-election or not.
July 15, 1960-June was the biggest month on record for the Hartselle city water department, registering a total pumping of 16,472,000 gallons, according to Coy Stephenson, water superintendent.
July 15, 1960-A successful Hartselle Girl Scout day camp concluded today. Mrs. Arthur Bean directed the camp, which had 65 participants.
July 15, 1960-Sen. John F. Kennedy formally accepted the Democratic presidential nomination tonight at the conclusion of the party’s national convention in Los Angeles. He has selected Texas Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson to be his running mate.
July 15, 1960-A tragic auto accident near Troy took the life of a Falkville youth, James Wayne Yarbrough, 18, this morning. His two passengers were also killed in the wreck.
It is believed that the teens, who were fatally injured when a loaded truck veered into the path of their car, were returning from a vacation in Panama City.
July 16, 1960—Alma McKee, a resident of Cedar Cove Road, is one of the entries in the Morgan County Maid of Cotton competition. She is a freshman at Howard College, majoring in elementary education.
July 17, 1960-The MCHS Class of 1935 held a reunion at City Park today. Former principal W. P. Snuggs, from whom they received their diplomas 25 years ago, was present. Two of the class members are deceased-Howell Turney, student body president, and Margaret Poole. Margaret Witt Burleson Smith (class president) and her husband were in attendance.
July 18, 1960-The John F. Thompson Post 52 of the American Legion, Hartselle, has been awarded four trophies for outstanding accomplishments during the past year at the annual Legion convention in Mobile.
July 19, 1960-After calling an executive session to bar an Enquirer reporter from the meeting, the city council in an adjourned meeting this afternoon drew up a resolution halting the proposal for a city party primary. This new resolution nullified a resolution presented on July 12 by Robert Street which would call on the State Democratic Executive Committee to hold a primary on September 13, just prior to the regular city elections. It says that Street’s proposal could not be effective before being submitted to the people. A city official told the Enquirer that reporting all of the city council’s actions might stir discontent in certain local areas.
July 20, 1960-A delegation of local citizens, headed by Mayor John Burleson, appeared before the Morgan County Board of Education tonight to discuss the possibility of setting up a Hartselle school district. In the delegation with the mayor were Mrs. Jo Chandler, Lynn Williams, David Bean, C. L. Orr, Hugh Penn, Loyd Logan and Ollie Camp.
July 20, 1960-The Music-Art Group met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Skidmore in Priceville this afternoon. The counselor, Miss Annie Ruth Waldsmith, discussed Raphael. At the conclusion of the program there was a watermelon cutting on the lawn of the Skidmore home.
July 21, 1960-Luther Hewlett Roberts is engaged to marry Mary Gaylia Wales on September 1. Mary is a resident of Elkmont 1 and a graduate of Ardmore High. Hewlett is a graduate of MCHS and attended Marion Military Institute and Auburn University. He is now associated with his father in business in Decatur.
