Sweet sounds coming to Princess
Rising country star Easton Corbin will be at the Princess Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. He will be performing his current hit, “I’m a Little More Country than That,” along with other selections.
The Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts has announced the events that will be featured during its 2010-11 season. Included are seven touring arts events in a professional series in addition to a variety of special events.
Season tickets are now on sale at the theatre’s box office, providing first choice of tickets and discounts.
Single ticket sales begin at the Princess Aug. 9.
A diverse lineup of acclaimed artists begins Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m. with Easton Corbin, a rising country star with the big hit “I’m a Little More Country Than That.” The 2009 International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year Dailey and Vincent appears in concert Oct. 12. The popular singer/songwriter Paul Thorn bring his musical storytelling to the stage Nov. 11.
The season features both drama and comedy theater productions.
Acclaimed actor Will Stutts, a native of the Shoals, performs his one-man play about the brilliant mind of the author “Edgar Allen Poe” Oct. 21 during NEA’s “Big Read” project.
“Big Read Decatur” is back for a month-long celebration in Oct 2010 of “The Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe.” Among the more than 30 events scheduled throughout the community is a free keynote lecture on Poe with Dr, Don Noble on Oct. 7, classic movies about Poe’s stories and the premiere of the “River City Mystery Film Festival” on Oct. 22-23.
A variety of other special events will include the holiday musical “A Christmas Carol” presented by the Theatreworks USA of New York City on Dec. 17 for two performances.
The fun will continue in 2011.
The theatrical comedy troupe of Reduced Shakespeare Company’s premiere of The Complete World of Sports (Abridged) is planned for Jan. 13. This profound piece of theater will even appeal to the most intractable couch potatoes and sports addicted fans.
On Jan. 29 the annual “Classical-Blues Cabaret” features blues guitarist Microwave Dave, classical guitarist Phil Weaver, pianist Ingrid Von Spakovsky and Ken Watters on trumpet in a unique musical experience that blends the blues, classical music and creative innovation.
Back by popular demand is Neil Berg’s new show of 101 Years of Broadway March 17, with Broadway stars direct from New York.
Broadway’s longest-running comedy thriller, Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, stops on its national tour March 31.
Winner of two Tony Awards in 2009 and London’s Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, the ploy is packed with laughs, thrills, special effects and more than 150 unique characters.
The 18th annual” Big Band Bash” showcases the best jazz bands from area schools and colleges and other Alabama big bands on April 7.
The “Classic Movie Series” is a new programming initiative top once again present movies on the big screed at the Princess. In addition to the mystery films of Edgar Allen Poe during the “Big Read,” the series will feature a series of Alfred Hitchcock’s classics, Christmas holiday movies and classic Hollywood movies.
The theatre’s season is made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, South Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
